Book Hotels Ahead of Time
Early in my travels I used to think it would be fun to “figure it out as I go”. This turned out to be a bad idea. It was quite a learning experience, but didn’t necessarily make for the most relaxing trip. I’ve found that it’s a much better idea to be prepared and have at least your first accommodation booked before your arrive in a new country.

Stay in Touch With Family and Friends
When traveling alone it is a good idea to inform your family and friends about your travel plans. Most places have wifi nowadays and you can easily keep in touch long-distance with apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, or FaceTime. If you’re traveling to more remote locations, make sure you get a local SIM card for your phone to stay connected.
Email Yourself Important Documents
Email yourself a copy of all your important documents before you leave, including copies of your passport and visa. This will come handy in case your belongings get lost or are stolen.
Trust Your Instincts
Trust your gut. If you’re ever in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to leave immediately. If you’re meeting new people during your trip, meet at a local cafe, or restaurant instead of a hotel room. Always remember that your safety is the most important factor. Confidence is your best defense here, so stay confident and enjoy yourself!

Pack Smart
It is easy to get carried away when packing for a vacation. Think carefully when packing and carry only what you will need, because you will be the one carrying your luggage. Make a list of what you plan to pack and then narrow it down. Use space-saver bags or packing organizers to make the most of the space you have!

Learn to Embrace the Alone Time
Dining by yourself: Don’t be afraid to ask for a table for one. Get a table on a balcony or near a window so you can enjoy some good people-watching. And hey – why not order dessert? Dining alone means never having to share your food, and taking all the time in the world to devour each bite. You’ll become your favorite dinner guest as you travel, increasing your confidence as you go.
A day of relaxation: Some days you should plan to do absolutely nothing. Traveling can sometimes leave you feeling tired, both emotionally and physically. Permit yourself to take a day to reflect on the experiences and adventures you’ve had. Stay in your hotel room, order room service, watch movies all day, and give yourself time to recharge your batteries so you can continue on your solo adventure. Self-care is extremely important when you’re traveling (and when you’re not!).
Fake it ’til you make it: There’s a lot to be said for acting like you know where you’re going (even if you don’t). Walk confidently and don’t make it obvious that you’re nervous, lost, or by yourself. And don’t draw attention to yourself as a tourist. Trust me, you’ve got this!
There’s a lot to be said for traveling solo. It can be a challenge, even scary at times. But if you put yourself out there and give it a try, you will never regret it. You are capable of anything that you put your mind to, and traveling solo will help you realize it.
